The third and fourth grade students have become ecologists these last few weeks of school, and have created ecosystems in a bottle. The goal is for them to be true self sustaining ecosystems. One student in each group was selected to bring the ecosystem home to observe, and hopefully return after the summer. The third and fourth grade students worked in teams to understand and explain Emily's alarm design. Emily's design includes an open and closed circuit using a switch that controls a light and an alarm. These four presentations were selected from Mrs. Cohen, Mrs. Dunham, and Mrs. Gergen's class.
The last few weeks, the third and fourth grade students have been completing their stop motion projects. They have been working very hard to include all of the necessary criteria. Each movie must include the explanation or example of a mathematical property, music, dialogue, a background, and have a completed storyboard. The students had so much fun using their creativity to highlight their favorite mathematical property!
What is a Stop Motion Movie, and how can we make one? For the last week, the students have been learning about Stop Motion Movies, and using the Lego Movie Maker App to produce their own. The final challenge is for the students to create a stop motion movie about a mathematical property. It will be exciting to see what the students come up with! We were very lucky to also have a special guest from ASU. Chad Westover, a lecturer from the Graphic Information and Technology department, shared some special tips and tricks when creating a stop motion movie. It was an exciting presentation! The third and fourth grade students have been persevering as they work on solving the Rubik's Cube! The students worked on solving stage two and three. Stage two is the white cross, stage three is solving the white face. The students were fantastically successful, with many students moving on to stage four, five, and six! For the last few weeks, the classes have applied their algorithms to create mosaic pieces. In art, the students created pixel art, and Mrs. Olsen and I selected a few for the classes to create mosaics with their cubes. They have turned out amazing!!
The third and fourth grade students have been working hard to complete their Rubik's cube models. in teams of six they created the 26 cubes necessary to build a Rubik's cube. Each group completed the challenge their own way. Some groups colored the individual cubes before attaching them, while others waited until the cube was complete. This challenge prepared the students for the upcoming cube challenge in several ways. First, they understand how the cube is constructed which will help as they try to solve the puzzle. Finally, as they worked as a team, they had to persevere as they constructed each individual cube. It was no easy task, but they didn't give up!
In the upcoming weeks, the third and fourth grade students will be working to solve the Rubik's Cube puzzle. Each student will have their own cube, as they work through six stages to solve the cube. It is a difficult challenge, but our Sundevil's will persevere to meet their goals. |
