The students are hard at work in the STEM lab! Kindergarten students are working as computer scientists as they program the Bee-Bots, and are getting ready to switch gears... They will be working as forensic scientists, and as they investigate a crime scene they will solve the rogue rodent mystery!
First and second grade students are continuing to study and create simple machines. They will use these skills to complete the Ocean Odyssey challenge. Using Legos, student will create a model of a new ocean animal, and they will create the animals habitat. As they are developing the new animal, they will use the PebbleGo website to research the adaptations the animal will have, the food it will eat, and its habitat. Finally, the students will create a Lego model that includes a simple machine. I can't wait to see what they come up with! Third and fourth grade students are working as computer scientists. The students will create a program that will simulate erosion. Students will solve puzzles, learn the basics of animation, design and create interactive stories, and create their own programs using the Tynker website. These kids are amazing! The K-8 Specials team has selected "Gift Cards" for their level basket that will be auctioned off at this year’s ASU Prep School Carnival. The carnival will be held on Friday, March 2, 2018. The first and second grade agricultural engineers are learning about pollination before they design and create hand pollinators. Students must recognize and begin to understand the pollination system as they solve real world agricultural problems. They will read non-fiction texts as well as watch these videos to begin gathering information.

This year, the students are becoming aquafarmers! Aquaponics is a system that uses fish waste to add nutrients to the plants. Over the last few weeks, we have been testing the water looking for nitrites and nitrates. The goal was to have very little, to zero nitrites, and less that 20 ppm nitrates. Once we reached the goal, the bio-filter was complete, and we added fish. The classes were so excited to see our ecosystem in action!
