The first and second grade students are continuing to investigate simple machines. This week's focus is the wheel and axles, and gears. After a quick introduction to the wheel and axles, the students have some free time to investigate the brand new Lego sets! Each group experimented with wheels, axles, gears, pulley, levers, and a wedge. The creativity was flowing!

This quarter, the first and second grade students will work in groups of two or three and participate in the Junior First Lego League Challenge. Here is a video that introduces the project. To complete the challenge, students must include a simple machine in their Lego models. This week, the students were introduced to six simple machines, the pulley, wheel and axle, the screw, the wedge, inclined plane, and lever. Each week, we will focus on a different simple machine using Legos or other materials. This week week we created pulleys! As a class, we brainstormed how we would use our chairs and a piece of string to create a pulley. We then used the pulley to pass notes! The students had so much fun! |
