The first and second grade students are continuing to prepare for their Junior First Lego League project. Students will be placed into groups of three, and will create a Lego model that represents a "place of learning". Each model must have a simple machine. We have worked with gears, pulleys, and wheels and axels. This week, the students are constructing two levers, and then comparing the amount of effort needed to lift the load. The vocabulary for the lesson is fulcrum, pivot, effort, force, and load. The lesson began with the book, Scoop, Sea Saw, and Raise, a Book About Levers.

We are so lucky to have 30 iPad minis in the STEM Lab! This week, the classes reviewed all of the parts on the iPad, the rules and expectations, explored the apps on the iPads, and we played a simple machines review game. It was very exciting! An hour just isn't long enough!
