The fifth and sixth grade students are beginning an engineering adventure next week! They will become green engineers as they design and create recycled racers. I have asked all students to bring their materials they have been collecting to school next week. This week, the classes were introduced to two students that they will be working with throughout the entire project. Their names are India and Jacob. These two students have traveled around the world, and will introduce the students to Senegal, a country in West Africa. In Senegal, discarded materials are brought to a scrap market to be reused. We have been collecting recycled materials for our own scrap market that they students will be able to utilize. To review the engineering design process this week, the students created a model tower. The challenge was presented by Jacob and India!

This weeks objective was for students to organize and evaluate "code" to move a character. The students were introduced to computer science, and were given an hour to learn about and work with coding. It was a very involved hour! The students were problem solving, reasoning, collaborating, and solving the challenges they faced. Code.org is wonderful website that students can use anytime with many different types of computer languages to learn, courses to take, and puzzles to solve. I have attached a short video that introduces the global movement that took place last week. It is very powerful! Mrs. Converse's fifth and sixth grade class got a jump start on their planning with the help of a few ASU students. The Eco Car Outreach team visited to share their eco car design and plan, as well as help the students design and build their recycled racers. The team brainstormed ideas for recycled materials, wheels, and possible materials for an axle. It was a very informative session! The students were engaged and are excited to begin building! Thank you to the outreach team for a wonderful presentation!
The fifth and sixth grade students are preparing for an upcoming project. They will be designing and engineering recycled racers. Green engineers think about how to solve problems in a way that prevents harm to the environment. The students will be creating their own "Scrap Market" to collect items that may otherwise be discarded to create their racers. If you are able to send in any of the items to our "Scrap Market", we would greatly appreciate it!
The fifth and sixth grade students are continuing to work on their green screen movies. They have written their scripts with Mrs. Biggs, and we are recording this week. The next two weeks, the students will finish their editing, and finalize their videos. They will be shown December 11th for the 5/6 summative.
The students are beginning to design and create the igloo. It is a work in progress this week as students change the design as they feel it is necessary. This week the students will sign up for morning to come in and work on the igloo beginning December 1st. It is getting exciting! Thank you for all of the milk jug donations! |
