To reinforce the engineering design process, the students walked through the process as they built a table out of newspaper and cardboard. The challenge required the students to create a table out of newspaper tubes, the table must reach eight inches, and it must hold a heavy book without falling over.

This week, the students were introduced to the engineering design process. Class began with a story about an engineer named Rosie Revere. The students learned that inventions don't always work the first time, and it is important to learn from the mistakes. What a perfect way to introduce engineering!
Finally, we reviewed the steps of the design process, and discussed the engineering challenge for next week!
This week, the fifth and sixth grade students were reviewing the scientific method. To review the steps, the students investigated acids and bases. The question the students began with was, what household solutions are acids, and which are bases? To determine the pH of each solution, the students began with a control group. Using the results from the control group, the students determined if lemon juice, Sprite, milk of magnesia, window cleaner, epsom salt, and tap water were acids or bases.
