As the students celebrate the fall season, we are studied the life cycle of the pumpkin! To investigate the pumpkin, the students used iPads to further their learning. I created QR codes that would link each iPad to a video or song that highlights the topic of discussion. Each pair of students took turns using the iPad to read the QR codes. The students listened to songs, watched time lapse videos, and video clips as we discussed the pumpkin's life cycle.

The kindergarten students continued to compare the data they collected during the OREO Challenge this week. They also learned about the greater than and less than symbols. Each student rolled their dice and compared the numbers they rolled using the symbols. I have attached the video that was played at the Phoenix Science Center Friday night. It is a compilation of photos taken as the students created, tested, and presented their Clifford Treat Holders. Click to set custom HTML The students are participating in a nationwide OREO stacking challenge. The map below shows the 150 schools that are participating so far. It is very exciting to participate in this challenge, and use real data to apply to mathematical applications! Before we begin the challenge, I start by sharing the data that has been collected so far. Even before we begin, the students have an opportunity to analyze data! The challenge is pretty basic, but it has some pretty specific rules. The stack is a single stack of cookies created by using one hand, without reorganizing as you go. The students love participating in this, and it is a wonderful opportunity to make data and information meaningful and engaging. |
