The students have completed the courses by coding their robots. The goal for the end of last week was to complete any three of the eight courses. The students are now taking video of their robots for an iMovie documentary. Each group will create a documentary that explains why coding is important, gives tips to new coders, and shares the problem solving strategies some of the groups came up with. I can't wait to see how they turn out! Here are a few videos of successful programs!
This quarter, the third and fourth grade students will be focusing on computer science. Individually, the students will continue to work on their code.org course, and in groups of three, they will be programming a robot called Sphero. We have five robots in the STEM lab that the groups of three must share. As they are waiting their turn to enter their programs into the Tickle App, they work on coding challenges on code.org. Each student has an account they can log into from my website located on the computer science tab. I have taped eight courses ranging in difficulty on the floor of the quad area. Each group selects a course, and together they write the algorithm to complete the course, enter their program into the Tickle App, and then test the program. Finally, the students will debug the program to make improvements. As each group completes each of the courses, they will reflect on their work. What problems did they have? How did they solve them? What went well? What tips would they give to new programmers? They are so excited to work, and feel real success as their perseverance pays off as they complete the courses!
