Today was the first day of school, and Mrs. Caro's class was the very first fifth grade class in the STEM lab. We had three objectives on the first day, and we accomplished them all! First, we discussed what STEM stands for, and what it means for our year together. Next, the class shared their favorite of the four subjects, and then wrote about the topics they would like to learn more about this year. These responses are mixed with the fourth graders from the first class, but it looks to me like engineering may have beat out the rest! Next, the class moved on to their first team challenge. The purpose of this challenge was for the students to practice working together to solve a problem, and to also share what went well with their group. I will use the information each group shared to grade the students as they complete future challenges, and remind the students what they expect from each other.
The challenge involved the students using a "tool" to move their cups into a specific design. They were not able to use their hands, and everyone was expected to participate.
