This week, I will be reading The Three Billy Goats Gruff to the classes. As engineers, the students will be challenged to design and build their own bridges using their "blocks". Before the students will begin designing and building, they had to become familiar with the "blocks". Each student brought three "blocks" to the carpet, and as a class we sorted them. The class determined if we should sort by size, shape, or color. We then discussed the shape of the blocks. The students had to determine if they were flat or solid shapes. I then told the class that they are rectangular prisms, and cubes. They were very excited to learn about the solid three dimensional shapes. Finally, the students had a chance to build with the blocks any way they wanted before the actual bridge build. As the students were building, I asked them to draw what they thought a bridge looks like. We will use this information next week as we begin to build the Billy Goat Bridge.
